Our research interest is molecular nociception, which is to understand the molecular mechanism and genetic control of pain sensation.
One of our major interests is in pain associated tissue acidosis. Muscle pain is our current focus. The second major interest is related to the acid signaling and interoception. Due to the fact that tissue acidosis does not always cause pain, we notice that acid signaling may trigger biofeedback to modulate physiological homeostasis. To solve this mystery, we are engaged in sorting the acid-sensitive sensory neurons based on their electrophysiology and molecular identity and mapping the neuronal substrates of acid-mediated interoception from peripheral to central nervous system. The third major interest is to identify the molecular and electrophysiological properties of stretch-activated ion channels in nerve terminals.
