Nankai University, Tianjin, China

Jian-Ren Shen received his B.S. degree from Zhejiang Agricultural University (now Zhejiang University) in China and Ph. D degree from The University of Tokyo in Japan. He has been studying the structure and function of photosystem II (PSII), especially the mechanism of photosynthetic water-splitting based on the high-resolution crystal structure of PSII. In 2011, he and his colleagues succeeded in analyzing the structure of PSII at 1.9 Å resolution, making it the largest membrane-protein complex whose structure has been solved beyond 2.0 Å resolution. Their studies revealed the detailed structure of Mn4CaO5-cluster, the catalytic center for water-splitting, and their achievement was selected as one of the 10 breakthroughs of 2011 by the journal Science.

Prof. Shen is a Professor in Okayama University of Japan and an adjunct professor in the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has received several awards including the Asahi Award, a special award of the Japanese Photosynthesis Society, and Sanyou-Shinbun Award.
