Wilfred van Gunsteren

ETH Zürich, Switzerland

Professor Wilfred van Gunsteren received his PhD in Nuclear Physics from the Free University, Amsterdam in 1976 before pursuing post-doctoral studies in molecular physics. He took up an appointment as Senior Lecturer in 1980 and then Professor of Physical Chemistry in 1986 at the University of Groningen before moving to his current position, Professor of Computer-Aided Chemistry, ETH Zürich, Switzerland in 1990. Professor van Gunsteren's research activities include the development of methods for the simulation of the behavior of biomolecular systems, their conversion into computer programs and their application in problems of practical interest. He has received numerous awards including the Royal Dutch Union of Chemists Gold Medal for Research 1987 and the Max-Planck Forschungspreis für Chemie und Pharmazie 2002. He is also the Founder and Director of Biomos, which sells the computer simulation program GROMOS (GROningen MOlecular Simulation) for the simulation of biomolecular systems.
